I had the pleasure of interviewing Lierre Keith. Lierre is the author of The Vegetarian Myth, which is not just about vegetarianism, but the whole farming and agricultural system.

It’s an unbelievable book broken up into three main parts: Moral Vegetarianism, Political Vegetarianism and Nutritional Vegetarianism. It is an amazing read and highly, highly recommended. (Grab your copy here: The Vegetarian Myth)

And that’s the reason I’ve been so pumped all week for this show…

Lierre spent a whopping 20 years as a vegetarian; her actual experience with vegetarianism is why many consider her to be the world’s leading authority on vegetarianism and its problems (20 years is an enough time to know if something works).

Lierre has always stood for justice and compassion, and after writing The Vegetarian Myth, she has been able to study the broader picture of the world’s food supply. I think she offers insight and wisdom whereas others offer conflict and ego. I believe she definitely has some of the answers with regards to what should be done with our farming and food. A very important topic for any one who eats!

If you have any environmentalist or vegetarian friends, send them a copy of this audio. As you’re about to find out, there is a lot more to this issue— it is a riddle in a web of myths!

  1. Lierre should spend some time working with hydroponic enthusiasts.

She greatly exaggerates the need for soil.

In reality soil just holds plants upright.

But plant roots can grasp metal with holes in it and that allows them to remain upright while
drawing moisture from water sponges etc.

The end result is good strong plants as long as nutients are added to the water.

      1. I seriously doubt Jim has read the book. He sent me a bunch of irrelevant quotes saying that cows use too much water and a whole bunch of baloney! blah blah… again, stop refer to factory farming (which Lierre does not support and clearly points out the differences). He forgets that grain require more water than the animal and that grains have destroyed much of the earths wetlands and dryed up many natural sources of water. Locally raised animals on a proper farm do no have these problems, additionally he sent me links to David Blaine the illusionists (like Chris Angel) as if it was proof that humans dont require meat!!! The guy clearly has not spent the time to actually look into these arguments. Soil is not over rated – it is a serious problem.

        1. Grains require more water? Over what timespan? And what if the grain is then fed to the cattle? Isn’t it a double-whammy?

          1. You have missed the point… Grains arent suppose to be fed to cattle. PERIOD. Grains do require more water- read her book, she has the references in it. Cows who are feed grains need more water- but the point is, grains are not suppose to be feed to cows… they are suppose to live on grass, yes?

          2. So so true……I saw a doco where they are feeding cows GMO corn, oats & other grains & it is causing major digestive problems in cows to the extend where it is blowing up their stomach causing their stomachs to rot. They opened up the stomach of a deceased cow & it was utterley disgusting undigested grains……give them what they are meant to eat fresh green grass……..Carole

  2. I just want to second this endorsement to Lierre Keith’s book. It is seriously like my bible! Thanks for such great insight, Ms. Keith!
